Destructor Bridge Replacement

Press release:

As part of the regeneration of Bath Riverside, the Destructor Bridge is being replaced with a new bridge designed to accommodate cycles, pedestrians, buses and vehicles for Bath Riverside residents. Some local amenities are affected by these works which commenced in April 2015.

The new bridge will be moved into place between Monday 18th April and Wednesday 20th April 2016 (inclusive). This work will necessitate the temporary closure of the river and towpath as well as Bath and North East Somerset Council’s Recycling Centre on Upper Bristol Road.  Continue reading Destructor Bridge Replacement

Is there value in the Bath Strava Data?

For those of you who are not aware, I’m an I.T. guy and have been involved with Bath Hacked for some time, even winning hackathons a few times. Bath Hacked has one hell of a reputation, been mentioned in parliament and is internationally known for their work with open data.

In January 2015 I approached Strava to ask if they would provide to Bath Hacked the 2015 Bath Strava Metro data set for free using the reputation Bath Hacked has garnered. A year later, Strava finally provided the 2015 data set to Bath Hacked. A data set valued at around £10,000.

Strava Metro

Strava Metro is a data service providing “ground truth” on where people ride and run. Millions of GPS-tracked activities are uploaded to Strava every week from around the globe. In denser metro areas, nearly one-half of these are commutes. These activities create billions of data points that, when aggregated, enable deep analysis and understanding of real-world cycling and pedestrian route preferences.

Bath Hacked have already written an initial set of articles about the data and will be following up with more analysis as we, and by that I mean you, start asking deeper questions of the data:

However the question is, what can 12,139 Strava Athletes tell us about cycling in Bath? More importantly how can CycleBath and the council use it to effect a more intelligent delivery of infrastructure?

The message is clear in the UK – if you’re a cyclist, your life does not matter.

It’s not often a document sums up the problem people have trying to just be be a person cycling to and from work/school in this country but this must ring true for so many of us that just want to have a bike as part of our lives.

Share this with your  MP, Police Chief, Councillors, and Council Highways departments.

Key quotes:

The message is clear in the UK – if you’re a cyclist, your life does not matter. Your safety does not matter. You do not have a right to get from A to B safely. And if a driver uses their car against you in a manner which is careless or dangerous, the police will find a way of ‘explaining away’ their actions, rather than tackling that driver. Oh, and course they’ll ask if you were wearing high-vis, as if that mattered in broad daylight with an aggressive driver trying to intimidate you.

Is the police entirely to blame for this? Of course not: primarily it is the fault of successive governments to make active travel more attractive by building infrastructure which prioritises active travel and provides a safe environment. But the police do play a very important role and they have failed entirely to take vulnerable road users seriously.

Cycling probably isn’t in decline in Bristol, but the city still has complacency issues

What is interesting about this is where the DfT measure cycling. If a similar approach is used in BaNES, as better quality off-road and quiet-way cycle infrastructure is developed, cycling will be perceived to drop, even though it is increasing.

It caught my eye because I’m quite ready to be critical of Bristol. And I will be.

But first, some reassurance. These numbers are (a) just a levelling off after years of growth, (b) probably not representative of the real situation in Bristol, and (c) probably a load of rubbish.

The numbers come from the Department for Transport. Here’s how they look when plotted as an index relative to 2000, alongside motor vehicles (beware, truncated y axis):


So this “decline” should be seen in the context of cycling journeys still being higher in number than in the last decade.

But actually this probably isn’t the right data to even tell you whether there has been a levelling off. You might get a clue…

Where your money goes.

It sounds boring and it probably is, but going to these and asking what funds are allocated to developing cycling are key.


The Council are holding a series of budget consultation meetings across the Communities of Bath and North East Somerset. These meetings provide people with the opportunity to hear about the Councils financial plans for the next four years. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and feed into the discussions on the budget proposals.

Shock tactics in canal towpath campaign.

Not only do you get an interesting article, you also get to see me sporting an acceptable moustache. Please please please attend the towpath consultations happening on Friday (Bathampton Village Hall 2-8pm) and Saturday (New Oriel Hall, Larkhall 11-5pm)

Those who fear improvements, planned for the canal towpath into Bath, will lead to a cycling take-over are using shock tactics to get their message across.

Graphic posters have been erected around the Grosvenor Bridge access route to the canal towpath into Bath showing the bloodied face of a woman who – we assume –  has been in collision with a cyclist.

Though the poster talks about ‘widespread evidence for an increase in speeding cyclists where towpath upgrades have already been done’  l have been told the image is of someone who does not live in this area and comes from an ‘incident’ which occurred several years ago elsewhere in the country.

Meanwhile, the poster says the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath is – l quote -“widely publicised as a part of the Two Tunnels circular cycle route…

The video MPs, councillors, and council officers absolutely need to see.

The Tour De France has delivered probably the single best video to underline the need to make cycling a serious transport option. If you are a councillor, MP, or work for a council, you need to spend 5 minutes and watch this video. Then you need to watch it again AND every time you commission a transport/public space project you need to watch it again.

AND you absolutely must go visit Utrecht. If you have a training budget, put yourself and your team on the and transform your view of transport.

PS: If you work in the NHS you absolutely should also probably watch this.

Further NCN 24 closures between Midford & Wellow.

Following on from repair closure along this stretch of the path, a sign has been put on to the gate near Midford announcing the farmer’s annual closures for grouse shooting parties.

Incidentally, the repair closure sign claimed the path would be open on Sunday, but if heading out to Wellow that day I think you should be prepared to climb the hill.

NCN 24 Closure Between Midford Viaduct & Wellow trekking centre

Sustrans South West have announced the stretch of NCN 24 between Midford Viaduct & Wellow trekking centre will be closed for one week (weather dependent) from Monday 20th for resurfacing. A diversion along Twinhoe Lane will hopefully be signed.

Further announcement: SustransSW say the path will be closed until Wednesday 29th
